Het hallucinante begin van Frantic doet vermoeden dat Polanski ijzersterk terugkeert na zijn geflopte piratenfilm Pirates (1986), maar een kleine anderhalf uur later blijkt dat de maestro weinig meer afleverde dan een redelijke spionagethriller. Frantic verliest spanning zodra Fords tegenspeelster Emmanuelle Seigner (Polanski's toenmalige vriendin) in beeld komt. Dan weet de kijker wel zo ongeveer hoe de zaken ervoor staan. Overigens doet Ford het als 'American abroad' uitstekend.
